Live from the COOL AID CORNER

Today we are starting an ongoing project that will allow students to share their learning.  The COOL AID CORNER was open for reporting and Joshua told us all about addition.  This was a greater way to show deeper thinking, because he had to show and explain the thinking.  Be sure to check back for the live broadcast!

More students will have an opportunity to report on their learning.  My goal is to have it as a learning station for kids to use every day.  It will take time to get there, but this is a great example of learning!

Look at the HEAT!

Today we learned that solids can change to a liquid all with heat!  Be sure to ask about how we got the solid crayons to change to the liquids.

When they cooled off, Miles said "as soon as it dried up it changed to a solider again, because it wasn't moving"

Science MATTERS

Mater is anything that takes up space and has mass.  Today we were Matter Investigators.  We used the i-touches to hunt in the school for solid matter that has different properties.  In the class we looked at different liquids and recorded their properties!  Way to go Miss B - great way to put matter in a real world situation.

Learning in the Field!

It is always fun to do things different, and today was no different!

We had a great trip to the Children's Museum and the BIG Hill.  We learned about motion, matter, and Communities.  All things that directly link to what we are doing in our room.  Thank you for making it a great day.

Using our 5 Senses!

Does something smell good?

Last Friday we finished up learning about our senses by making Apple Sauce! It was a yummy way to learn and it made our room smell wonderful.  Great way to bring in FALL.

Building a community!

This week we have been learning all about community and using maps to navigate our way around the community.  Everyone had to make a house and buildings for the community.  We used what we knew to plan out the community.

Joshua said - I would want to live by the Police Station.

MacKenzie thought that bad people might be by the police station and moved her home.

Audrey made a great grocery store - I would for SURE shop there!

Grant even put his port-a-potty in the construction site.

Beckett made the roads, and Zoe said we had to have roads to get to places.

This was a WONDERFUL example of Project Based Learning!

What is an UMP Statement?

We are starting to solve word problems!  Today we learned that the first step after reading the problem, is to write your UMP statement.  This is when you take the question and turn it into a statement where UMP or ____ is the number that we are looking for but don't know yet.

Watch this little video to see a real live example!
I was so proud of the ways the kids were able to start working today.  We will continue to build solid routines as we solve math problems.
