Building up to 10!

This week we are focusing on building up to 10 and then adding. If you imagine your quick math in your head, this it the manipulation of numbers that you do all the time. Here is an example of me doing a problem and then a student showing her work! Way to go Lucy!

this is WHY?

Today was an amazing moment in math... several kids were practicing their adding strategy of breaking to 10 and adding the ones. I accidentally gave them something that would make the ones make a new group of 10 and they handled it beautifully because the strategy was internal. So, we took it a little further and this is what we got... Drew and a few others were able to use what they know and solve something bigger. After cleaning up math tubs, Drew showed the class his thinking on the big board. WAY TO GO CLASS! It makes this teacher heart extra full!

What an amazing trip we had yesterday! We all played hard. Here are a few highlights!

How Does OUR Grade Grow?

A little red wagon full of dirt is the perfect place to plant a garden. Yesterday we planted radish and beans. Each day 2 students are the gardeners. They are responsible for moving not to the best location, watering and recording the growth on our calendar. Be sure to check back to watch our progress. 

Adding by breaking down to 10

Today we will start using our number sense and knowledge of 10 to add numbers to 20. This week the focus will be on breaking down to 10 and then adding the ones. I have made a short video to help you at home know what we are doing in class. Keep checking back for more videos as we learn more strategies. This may seem like a lot of steps for an easy math problem, but we are learning strategies now with easy numbers so that studnets can start applying them to bigger numbers.
