A little Halloween Predicting...

We started a little experiment that will take about 5 months to complete. Today we talked about where the trash goes when you put it int he trashcan. To test our predictions, we filled a pumpkin with trash from our snack and buried it deep in the ground (thanks to Mr. Davis for digging out hole!). It will be great to dig up in 5 months on Earth day and see what is left! Do you want to predict with us?

Map Skills Get Us Where We Need to Go!

We are starting to learn about map skills. We created a map with all kinds of buildings that are located in a community,. we even had a construction site (Thanks Logan - that makes Mrs. J feel right at home from the mess on Memorial). The first step was to learn about relative locations like near, far, next to, to the left of and to the right of. We used our iPads to record a description of the buildings that we made in our own city map! We also put some motions to learning about where we live in the big picture. Hope you like our work! And here is our class video!

A little HOCO royality

If you didn't hear the news, our very own Future Teacher, Kendall Howard was on the Memorial Homecoming Court. I know lots of HCE kids were at the game to cheer her on. I am sure that Reggie and Wilcox made sure that she new we loved her! Way to go sweet Kendall!

unBEARable Mystery Reader

Friday we were treated to a BEARy bid surprise. Our mystery reader was a bear, not a scary bear - a Friendly Mom Bear. Mrs. Chandler did a great job at showing all the super bears that are in different books! We loved the costume and enjoyed the great books. Thanks CLAIR BEAR's mom for making it an exciting time!

BRIDGES...put to the test

We have had a few weeks to work on our bridges and Friday was the day that we put them to the test. Students are able to work on the STEM cart after they finish their work. It is completely optional, but very much loved! The first challenge we had was to use any material and build a bridge that would support a cut of 20 pennies. All but 1 bridge held the weight. Some even held easily 46 pennies. I think we might have some future Civil Engineers in the making!

Shadow Creatures

As we learn about light and shadows, we took a little time to get creative! We made foil people, which required lots of fine motor strength and patience. Later we used light sources to see how the shadow can change from the placement of the light. This was a great way to put the pieces together (esp since the sun hasn't been very helpful the last few days).

What is an ump statement

Here is a video that will help you better understand what we are doing in math with word problems. A great thing to do at home to help practice, ask your student question and have them turn them into ump statements. Example... parent "How many flowers do you see?" Student "I see ___ flowers." parent " How many books did you read this year?" student "I read ____ books this year?"

A little more fun from the week

Here is a little more of the fun we had this week. It was a great week to have a lunch bunch. I like to invite a few kids to eat lunch outside. We will pick a character attribute as a goal and then invite kids to celebrate at lunch. I love to take this time to visit and get to learn more about the kids. This time I learned that Andrew and Daniel don't like the same foods!

We got to hear from the author of School's First Day of School. It was great to see the first book Adam Rex wrote as a kindergartner. We loved to hear about the process that he took to write his book!
