Johnson's Giraffes For the WIN!

What a great day for fun on the field. The Johnson Giraffes worked as a team and came out on top (like all good Giraffes!).

Wonderful Wednesday

A terrific Tuesday

Have a Terrific Tuesday!

Monday Madness!

I have been given the great opportunity as part of the redesign team to attend a conference on Personalized learning in Orlando, Florida. To help keep things moving, I have flipped my lessons. I hope you enjoy your Monday!

Great kids make...GREAT AMERICANS!

We wrapped up our learning about great Americans and the contributions they made as Good Citizens. I pulled lots of objects out of a bucket and the kids decided who it represented. They worked in groups to put the objects on the characters for display. I am a big fan of the author Piven. He wrote a book What a President is made of and What an Athlete is Made of. Enjoy these original Piven's done by our class!

in the SHADOWS...

We are learning about light as a source of energy and we took some time to play with shadows. First we did a shadow walk (this was a great week to be outside). Chloe R said "my shadow does what I do" Next we build some foil solid objects and used a flashlight to discover where the light comes from to make the shadow. A few kids took it further to see that the shadow gets bigger and smaller as the light source moves closer and farther. It was great fun and sorry in advance if they use your aluminum foil to build stuff (IT WAS A BIG HIT!).

Step 1 - Word Problems

We are working our way through solving word problems. Yesterday we learned how to turn the Question into a statement where ___ (umm) is the number that we don't know. Here is a quick little explanation to help parents at home. A good way to help kids practice at home...Ask them questions where they don't know the answer (like the hair on Addie's head in the video), and have them answer with a statement where ___ (umm) represents the number we don't know.

The Author's Chair

Did you know that we write everyday in 1st Grade! The Author's chair is a great place to develop confidence, while friends complement and critique our work. Check out Lydia in the author's chair. She is sharing her topic book about Soccer. Be sure to ask your student what they are writing about (it should be something they know a lot about!).

Matter in Motion

We need to move and it all MATTERs! Today we learned about how matter can change from one state to another. We know that heat or cold (less heat) has to be added to make matter change between states (not States like Texas - but kinds!) Check out these examples!

Think Forward Thursday!

Thanks for doing a great job while I was at a meeting. I am back tomorrow, so enjoy the videos I made. I have a big treat for you that we will talk about tomorrow!

busy day ...Tuesday!

I am out for a few days to attend a district meeting involving the redesign team for HCE. This is a wonderful opportunity for me to help build a new future for Hunters Creek and all our kids. While I am gone, Mrs. Grey will be here. I filmed a lot of the lessons for the day so that I could stay involved in the week! This will give parents a little understanding of what we are doing in class!
