Learning gets DIRTy!

Today we learned made learning get DIRTy, We learned all about dirt, and the things that make up dirt!  We explored 3 types of dirt to see the sediment that makes up each kind of dirt.   It was great to have hands on learning, even if it got a little messy!

Operation RID the Squirrels!

As you have heard, we have a squirrel problem.  They are very brave and chewing through 5 backpacks to gt to our snacks.  After doing a little research, we found an organic way to get rid of the squirrels.  We are now conducting a little experiment.  We kept data last Friday to see how many squirrels we saw on the porch.  Today we mixed our solution of cayenne pepper and dish soap.  We sprayed the area of the porch in front of our backpacks, and then waited.  Check out our data sheet.

Good news, no squirrels near our backpacks (and a few people forgot to bring in their snack).  Miss Andrews caught one down by her backpack red handed (but it was outside of the sprayed area).  Check back for more information as we look at the data and draw a conclusion to our information!

Subtracting from the 10's

Here is one last strategy we are teaching to work on subtracting when we don't have enough in the 1's place.  We are using place value to perform mathematical operations, and not just memorizing an algorithm.

Thank you for your continued support to help build strong math students!

Doubles Plus 1

When working a problem that has 2 parts that are next to each other on the number line (or 1 away from each other), you can use the doubles plus 1 strategy.

It is best with TEAMWORK!

This week we are using the new year to build a sense of team in our classroom.  On Tuesday, we made a compliment web.

More Ways to Add...

Here is an example of how we can add by breaking down to a group of ten and then adding the ones.

One more strategy we can use.  When the 2 parts that we are adding are 1 apart (or next to each other on the number line), we can add the doubles and then add 1 more.  See how...

Dreaming Big in 2016!

It was great to have everyone back and ready to work.  We started the day off by writing about a dream we want to accomplish in 2016.  We read about how Michael Jordan made a dream and eventually accomplished it!

It was great to see everyone thinking on ways they can make or do something BIG!
